the confederate flag

Why Southerners that the Confederate flag is a symbol of heritage?
Just do not understand the flag of the Confederacy general be put in some people's homes and government buildings in the South. It is undoubtedly linked to slavery and racism. So why Southerners continue to defend and support it? I've heard the argument of heredity, but regardless, it is logical for secession, racism, old-world thinking. I know there are Southerners that are not compatible with the flag, but why do some still support it?
"It is undoubtedly associated with slavery and racism." In his mind is. Although people under the fact that some people claim it is not slavery, I would say that the link to them is dubious at best. Yes, the South had slaves. No, not all relics of the South is linked to slavery. No more than any device is connected to North defrauding the Native American lands grain or small pox ridden blankets or all aspects of California culture is linked to the construction of railways in China. "So why what Southerners continue to defend and support? I've heard the argument of heredity, but regardless, representing the secession, racism, the thought of old world. "This is the classic logical fallacy of" begging the question, "ie, the proposition to be tested (which is slavery and racism) is assumed implicitly or explicitly in one of the premises (his). He asked people what it was they, he said, and then ignored his response and is implicitly that his own view was still correct. If you really want to understand this, YOU CAN NOT IGNORE WHAT THE "OPPOSITION" It tells you your opinions. For many, it means no such thing as slavery. I am one. I grew up in Middle Tennessee, went to school in Alabama, and moved to Texas as an adult. I've spent my life in the south. I dug the metal detected and Civil War artifacts, U.S. and CSA both. I've played up and on farms in the footsteps of the old slave cabins when I was too young to even know what they were. His ancestors on both sides of the war, though my ancestors were dirt poor Southern farmers who never had a single slave. They were fighting for the rights of states, not only of slavery. They had nothing to gain from slavery. However, they fought and died in South. What happened in the South with slavery was a horrible parody of human rights at all levels, but the South (and war) was much further that one, more simplified, boiled down the explanation. I think it's a big difference. People who see the flag as racist tend to think mainly in the Old South a racist, slavery-oriented terms. Those thing that the flag of rebellion or property in the South think very different and far more varied levels. Slavery was one aspect, but one of many and not even look bigger or more important. Most who see it as only legacy see slavery as the most visible from a deeper difference in rural and urban cultures and disgust for the wealthy, distant legislators telling them what they can and can not do (to the Revolution Americana). However, I find the flag offensive, unless used to offend people certainly many do. Yes, the flag represents the secession one way, while there was a phrase such as rebellion. And many still do not think either are a bad thing. (Look, I am glad that the North won, would not be in any closer to where we are or not. However, as a libertarian, I think the idea of forcing the secessionist states in the Union to remain strange, at best, and the offensive aggressive at worst. We fought a revolution to get rid of a country, but when some of us tried to escape has been a bad thing?) A lot of southerners more educated use the Stars and Stripes to show wealth. Shows the same, but without much controversy, and has not been used continuously for a century for greater depreciation of reputation. Try looking this way … Take you a symbol of love and I think if anyone would find offensive (whether you agree with your point of view or not). Then justify your defense of it. Say you are a patriot and find nothing offensive about the U.S. flag, eg. However, I dare say that many people around the world do. If you or us all stop flying this? Let's say you have a Malcolm X shirt that you like. Do not you think some people may offended by it? Should not be allowed to wear? A shirt of Che Guevara? For or against signing the abortion? A hat with the word "bad" in it? The Fahrenheit 9 / 11 or Bowling for Columbine DVD in your movie collection? baggy pants? Gang colors? Council Piercings? The religious iconography of any type? A police uniform? Etc. Etc. Why people do or should continue to support any of these things, knowing that others find offensive?

The Confederate Battle Flag
$10.98 In recent years, the Confederate flag has become as much a news item as a Civil War relic. Intense public debates have erupted over Confederate flags flying atop state capitols, being incorporated into state flags, waving from dormitory windows, or adorning the T-shirts and jeans of public school children. To some, this piece of cloth is a symbol of white supremacy and enduring racial injustice; to others, it represents a rich Southern heritage and an essential link to a glorious past. Polarizing Americans, these "flag wars" reveal the profound--and still unhealed--schisms that have plagued the country since the Civil War. The Confederate Battle Flag is the first comprehensive history of this contested symbol. Transcending conventional partisanship, John Coski reveals the flag's origins as one of many banners unfurled on the battlefields of the Civil War. He shows how it emerged as the preeminent representation of the Confederacy and was transformed into a cultural icon from Reconstruction on, becoming an aggressively racist symbol only after World War II and during the Civil Rights movement. We gain unique insight into the fine line between the flag's use as a historical emblem and as an invocation of the Confederate nation and all it stood for. Pursuing the flag's conflicting meanings, Coski suggests how this provocative artifact, which has been viewed with pride, fear, anger, nostalgia, and disgust, might ultimately provide Americans with the common ground of a shared and complex history. |

Colors And Blood: Flag Passions Of The Confederate South
$9.41 As rancorous debates over Confederate symbols continue, Robert Bonner explores how the rebel flag gained its enormous power to inspire and repel. In the process, he shows how the Confederacy sustained itself for as long as it did by cultivating the allegiances of countless ordinary citizens. Bonner also comments more broadly on flag passions--those intense emotional reactions to waving pieces of cloth that inflame patriots to kill and die. PPiColors and Blood/i depicts a pervasive flag culture that set the emotional tone of the Civil War in the Union as well as the Confederacy. Northerners and southerners alike devoted incredible energy to flags, but the Confederate project was unique in creating a set of national symbols from scratch. In describing the activities of white southerners who designed, sewed, celebrated, sang about, and bled for their new country's most visible symbols, the book charts the emergence of Confederate nationalism. Theatrical flag performances that cast secession in a melodramatic mode both amplified and contained patriotic emotions, contributing to a flag-centered popular patriotism that motivated true believers to defy and sacrifice. This wartime flag culture nourished Confederate nationalism for four years, but flags' martial associations ultimately eclipsed their expression of political independence. After 1865, conquered banners evoked valor and heroism while obscuring the ideology of a slaveholders' rebellion, and white southerners recast the totems of Confederate nationalism as relics of the Lost Cause. PAt the heart of this story is the tremendous capacity of bloodshed to infuse symbols with emotional power. Confederate flag culture, black southerners' charged relationship to the Stars and Stripes, contemporary efforts to banish the Southern Cross, and arguments over burning the Star Spangled Banner have this in common: all demonstrate Americans' passionate relationship with symbols that have been imaginatively soaked in @Ñë…¸Rÿ¾Úx |

Confederate Symbols in the Contemporary South
$9.36 This illustrated collection of essays examines the controversy surrounding the use and display of Confederate symbols in the modern South. Prominent scholars from many disciplines explore the battle between pro-Confederate-symbol forces (traditionalists) and anti-Confederate-symbol forces (reconstructionists) as they struggle to reconcile the values and customs of a racially conservative Old South and a racially liberal New South.pShould the Confederate battle flag continue to fly atop a state capitol dome, or does this official display violate the constitutional rights of some citizens? Should Confederate flags and monuments be removed completely from the landscape? Should public funds be used to maintain Confederate monuments on courthouse lawns, traffic islands, and public facilities? These are a few of the questions addressed in this collection. |
