Texas Gonzales

Lockhart is one of the most historic communities in Texas, the city was established by Byrd Lockhart in 1800. Lockhart, who was an assistant inspector of Green DeWitt, built roads with their own finances, and requested a land grant on Plum Creek, however, that grows despite living in nearby Gonzales.
When Lockhart farmed the land, was made accessible to others, who settled the community shortly thereafter, and although the city was originally in Gonzales County, the city later created Caldwell County and became the county seat, due to the distance to Gonzales and poor roads made it difficult to get there. County was named for Matthew Caldwell and Caldwell was a scout and leader of a group of rangers who fought in the Battle of Plum Creek and later against Mexico.
From the small town lies on the Chisholm Trail, after the area was beaten by a severe drought, farmers joined the cattle industry, and later found some cotton varieties resistant to drought, so cotton farming became a popular activity for the early settlers, along with livestock. The railroad reached nearby Luling in the 1870s and a decade later, the railroad arrived in Lockhart, and in the decade 1920, oil is being discovered in Luling and Lockhart, and the town was known as a boomtown during that time period.
Today, Lockhart retains its historic air and taste of the old west, and there are numerous downtown buildings that line the main street, including the Eugene Clark Library, a historic structure built with a $ 10,000 donation by Dr. Eugene Clark, who was a native of New Orleans. Dr. Clark, a notable early resident, funds bequeathed to the library on his deathbed, and later, the library was improved and is now the main source of reference and reading materials for students and other inhabitants of the town. Lockhart also offers a refuge for Austinites trying to escape the high prices of real Austin market in the state.
The courthouse Caldwell County is a very historic structure dating back to 1894, Muldoon blue sandstone and red sandstone building setting is located in Pecos Street San Antonio in the downtown area as well. The courthouse is one of the oldest in Texas, and Eugene Clark Library is the oldest operating library in Texas, as are many buildings of this historic community.
Lockhart has a population of just over 12,000, and the area of Lockhart is 11.3 square kilometers of water is 04. Lockhart is located on the Guadalupe River, which stretches south of New Braunfels all the way to the coast and through most of the cities located on or near Highway 183 South. Lockhart was the site of the infamous Battle of Plum Creek, which locals fought the Comanche Indians, and after the community was founded by the locals, many of whom were survivors of the battle or relatives of those who fought for our freedom and security.
Today, Lockhart is known for its barbecue, and visitors and residents have four choices of places to sample the local specialty, including Black Barbecue, Kreuz Market, Smitty's Barbecue, and Chisholm Trail Barbecue. The roast that is prepared at these establishments is not made with barbecue sauce, and is based on its smoky flavor and the meat renowned for its sweet taste, among other factors. To find out how good it is, let's scenic and historic Lockhart and try a sample of the best!

With Bold Strokes: Boyer Gonzales, 1864-1934
$4 The earth, sea, and clouds graced this watercolorist's canvas, and with each bold stroke Boyer Gonzales captured his subjects in his own distinctive style. Throughout his life, Gonzales drew and painted scenes around him - from the South Texas coastline to Mexico. In 1895 he pioneered the route of American painters in Mexico, where he found scenes he would return to time and again. He truly entered the art scene, though, in 1916 when his watercolor In a Texas Swamp was included in an annual exhibition sponsored by the Art Institute of Chicago and was further honored by being selected for an extended tour of museums in cities throughout the United States. Along with fifty of Gonzales's works, author Edward Simmen includes the artist's life story, drawing his information primarily from the Gonzales Family Papers at the Rosenberg Library (comprising diaries, scrapbooks, sketch pads, letters, drawings and sketches, clippings and family photographs). Admirers of Gonzales's work, as well as those interested in early-twentieth-century American impressionism, will find this a beautiful examination of his life and career. |

The President's Counselor: The Rise to Power of Alberto Gonzales
$4.99 In defiance of expectations, statistics, and stereotypes, Alberto Gonzales has risen to become one of the most powerful men in America. Gonzales has been the nexus for key policy points for the Bush administration, and holds inflammatory and very influential positions on issues that seize and polarize the nation - privacy, capital punishment, and torture. Gonzales's unyielding loyalty to George W. Bush - during a time when to call his presidency "controversial" would be an understatement of massive proportions - is a fascinating study in the politics of ambition. From his modest beginnings in Humble, Texas, to his stone-faced refusal to buckle under the pressure of dissenters, The President's Counselor provides never-seen insight into the man whose influence over a very powerful president in very pressing times will undoubtedly impact people here and abroad for years to come. |

Battlefields of Texas
$13.45 Texas is a blend of many cultures and identities. [Such a blend does not come easily, however. When a land as great and rich as Texas changes hands so many times, it does not do so peacefully.] BRTexas has been the site of numerous battles; Adobe Walls, Blanco Canyon, Gonzales, Salado, San Jacinto, the Alamo, Palo Duro Canyon, and Rattlesnake Springs are just a few of the many historical sites examined in Battlefields of Texas. BRVivid descriptions of the fields of battle, individual profiles of the participants, and retrospective analysis of each battle make this book an excellent reference for Texas and military historians alike. Maps of some of the battlefields and historical photos are included in this unique collection of Texas history. |
