Assassin's Creed What are the flags for (Windows, steam)?

I have Assassin's Creed via Steam on Windows. I see flags and have collected a few here and there. I do not know what they're for … a quick search says that achievements are 360 and so forth, but on Steam, must not speak of achievements, so I'm assuming there's another reason to get all of them. What is it?

The flags to unlock the achievements of their profile Xbox Live Xbox version. For the PS2 and PC that do absolutely nothing but give a sense of accomplishment. Seriously, no bonuses or anything, just the prestige to do so. The same goes for the Templars. You get nothing for killing them. However, it will not stop me find them all.
