These indicators evolved into national flags and maritime flags of today. Because there was no means of communication between two ships at sea, the flags became the preferred means of communications. This led to various forms of signals used in the Navy today. For example: Alpha, Bravo and so on.

At the beginning of the 17th century, armies completely replaced centralized European knights. This that's when the flags not only became the means of identifying their nationalities, but also individual military units. The importance of flag was drawn to new levels. However, these indicators were too dangerous to those who carried them and the First World War that were removed from the battlefield. Since then, the flags have been used only on ceremonial occasions.
