Then came in 2506/1963 the persecution of Buddhism and the Buddhist crisis which became a political and militant monks. The crisis began on the eve of the Day Visakha Puja, 8 May, 2506/1963, when the police, to enforce an order of the President on the use of flags, broke down some of the flags raised for Buddhists celebrations. Then followed the responses of protests and violent Buddhists from government to the extent of destruction and bloodshed. The monks went the people in political demonstrations, hunger strikes and suicides of sacrifice by burning to death. It Thich Quang Duc, 73-year-old monk, who was the first performed self-immolation on June 11, 2506/1963. It was followed by a number of monks, nuns and lay Buddhists. Among the five demands of the Buddhists were equal to the law for Buddhists and Catholics, and free practice and propagation of the Buddhist faith. The event, which began as a purely religious issue became quickly a test of political power. Madame Nhu, the sister of President-in-law, despised and condemned Buddhists as communists. Even, he said, "If another monk barbecue same, I applaud. "On August 21, Buddhists' headquarters and stronghold Za Loi pagoda was crushed by Ngo Dinh Nhu and martial law was proclaimed. The American Council to reconcile with the Buddhists was not accepted.
At this point, the U.S. government ordered the cessation of support for Nhu and agreed to support the soldiers who planned to overthrow Ngo family. Then the way for a successful coup had been raided by the Buddhist opposition against the government and the Diem regime was finally overthrown November 1, 2506/1963, by a military coup. Ngo Dinh Diem and Ngo Dinh Nhu were assassinated.

VIETNAMESE BUDDHIST reorganize
After the 1963 coup Buddhists became an important political force in Viet Nam, the third largest after the Army and the Vietcong. The group of soldiers who had I wanted to power after winning their support, as adopted Vietnamese Buddhist Unification Congress held in Saigon on 21 December, 2506/1963, 3 January 2507/1964. The main result of this meeting was the establishment of the Unified Buddhist Church of Vietnam (also called Unified Buddhist Association) who joined followers1 with the Theravada sect and Mahayana Buddhists who gave a new type of organization with a hierarchy, parallel to the structure of government.

The Governing Body at the top of the Unified Buddhist Church of Vietnam was the Assembly of Elders, composed of about fifty to seventy respected senior monks. The Assembly was presided by the Patriarch, who was elected to a term of four years from among the members of the Assembly. Under the Assembly was the Vien Hoa Dao, or the Council for Implementation Dharma, with a chairman, three deputies and a Secretary General. The Vien Hoa Dao consisted of nine departments or commissions (comparable to government ministries), dealing Sangha affairs, education, youth, cultural affairs (or art and literature), the government of nuns, lay people, social services, construction and finance, and dissemination of the Dharma. The organization at provincial and district followed the same structure of the nine departments and was subject to an electoral system. All positions heads of key departments from the provincial level were conducted by the monks, if Mahayana or Theravada.

Besides these established the Chaplain Corps Buddhist welfare programs for families of soldiers, which in practice became a Buddhist leadership support in the Army. In 2507/1964, with the initiative of Thich Nhat Hanh, the Church also created in the Department of Education's Institute of Higher Buddhist Studies in Saigon, which was shortly thereafter, in That same year, became the University Van Thich Hanh Chau Min as its first rector. In 1966, this university had an enrollment of over 2,000 students.
