Bahamas Bahamian

I spent a month last year on the island of Eleuthera in the Bahamas, never heard of him? It's a little long, thin island uninhabited at the eastern end of the Bahamas. I have to say that one of the most pleasant of the trip was the food of the Bahamas, of course, I love that about every place I visit! I love to try local dishes and the Bahamas was no exception.
Food is probably not the first thing you think when you think of the Bahamas with all the beautiful white sand beaches and crystalline turquoise and azure. Please allow yourself the indulgence of food in the Bahamas all you can experience regret it later.
The kitchen receive the attention it deserves in the local island restaurants showing a diversity that is unexpected with many international styles mixed in exact native food that is experienced even vary from one island to another and also depends on the species of fish that is served. As one might imagine a large part of its dishes are based on seafood products with the abundance of water the islands all share.
Prepare to experience the choice of foods and flavors that have never had it in the Bahamas the chefs enjoy being unique and distinctive.
One of the foods you probably will not experience anywhere else on such a scale is the meat from the shell. This is the favorite food of the native Bahamians and is only used in every dish on potential than you can imagine. When I lived there last summer I had conch salad, fritters Snail, snail soup to burgers and conch! One of my favorites but not raw conch with lime juice, chili and fresh tomato and onion. But beware, when I say chili, I mean hot! Being of Cajun descent, I grew up with hot food and even the peppers in Mexico are so hot how are you!
Another dish very popular with locals is especially fish and grits. The fish is cooked with salt pork, peppers and onions and served with grits as A fee of breakfast. I am very used to that every morning.
You must try the local variation of the fish soup in all the island is well. Although the exact recipe varies slightly which is usually made with fresh grouper, which are abundant there, tomatoes, lemon juice and dark rum, absolutely delicious.
Do not be afraid to try these and many other local foods, while offering the opportunity to travel to the Bahamas.

Bahamian Society After Emancipation
$75.95 This book examines the social aspects of Bahamian society between the early 19th and mid-20th centuries, advancing our knowledge of Bahamian history and helping to locate the Bahamas within the regional and historical context of the West Indies. It shows how, despite the absence of sugar and a commercial rather than agricultural economy, the Bahamas' social development bears great similarities to other countries of the Caribbean in terms of the extreme poverty experienced, the oppressive socioeconomic conditions and acute racial and social divisions that developed in the post-emancipation era. The first part of the book details life and culture within the black community and includes chapters on the colored middle class in the late 19th to mid-20th century, the role of women and aspects of African-Bahamian cultures during the same time. The middle section underscores the effects of Prohibition, including blockade running and alcohol tourism, and the impact of traditional tourism on Bahamian society. The final part of the book covers the historical events that arose out of the growing dissatisfaction among blacks with respect to racism and political and economic marginalization, including the riot of 1937 and the strikes of 1942 and 1958. |

Bahamian Memories: Island Voices of the Twentieth Century
$86.94 In Bahamian Memories, Olga Jenkins offers a story of the last 100 years of Bahamian history, letting those who lived it tell it. Allowing each person's story to stand with its own color, texture, and pattern, she has created a people's history of these Bahamians.pMost of the 40 people Jenkins selected were born during the first three decades of the 20th century, and their voices are as varied as the populations of the eight islands the author visited, including black, white, mixed, and working- and middle-class individuals. Their views of change during the last century are captured in discussions ranging from early lifestyles, beliefs, and values to traditional occupations and customs to contract farming and tourism.pThese stories remind readers that this archipelago, less than 100 miles off Florida's east coast, is close both geographically and historically to the United States. When the white Bahamian government and power brokers expressed a desire to attract U.S. tourist dollars, the consequence was the introduction of greater racial segregation in the Bahamas during the first half of the century. When liquor was outlawed in the United States during Prohibition, the Bahamian government and a few shrewd Bahamian citizens made tremendous profits by supplying liquor to bootleggers. When World War II took American workers abroad, Bahamian labor often helped keep U.S. farms and agricultural markets afloat.pJenkins's parents were born on the Bahamian island of Eleuthera, and her roots are evident throughout this work. Approaching oral history with insight and sensitivity, she has preserved for scholars and future generations an important inspirational and educational legacy. |
